Extractions

Our dentists make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, extractions are necessary when decay has made the tooth unsalvageable or when you have an advanced periodontal disease. When a tooth is malformed, damaged, impacted or ingrown, different procedures are used, but all extractions are considered surgery. Depending on which tooth is removed, we can offer you a replacement in the form of a dental implant or oral prosthetic.

Wisdom Teeth

The reason we remove wisdom teeth is to prevent them from damaging other healthy teeth. Often, wisdom teeth erupt perpendicularly to the teeth next door (your second molars). When wisdom teeth come in sideways like this, it throws off your bite, creates an area where food gets caught, decays both of the teeth, and can even cause a painful infection.  Depending on your age and how your wisdom teeth are growing in, we may recommend removal or refer you to a specialist.

FAQ

Do I need my tooth extracted?

Depending on how decayed and/or broken down your tooth is, we may recommend extracting your tooth.  If left untreated, a decayed or infected tooth could cause unpleasant symptoms and spread to adjacent teeth.  If we determine that your tooth cannot be saved, it is best to have it extracted as soon as possible.

What should I expect during an extraction procedure?

During the extraction procedure, you may feel a sensation of "pushing" or "pressure" as your tooth is being removed.  You should not feel any sharp pain as we will give you local anesthesia to numb that part of your mouth.

How long is the healing process?

The healing process starts immediately after the extraction and can last up to several weeks or even months, depending on your own boy and how well you take care of the wound.  It is important to follow the dentist's instructions for caring for your wound.
